Parenting is often challenging, but parent-child interaction therapy can offer guidance. Make yourself and your child happier by building relationships and supporting one another.
Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is more than just showing you how to be a better parent; it’s attachment-focused therapy geared toward providing the tools to create a stronger relationship with your child. Decades of research demonstrate its effectiveness as an intervention method.
Children engaged in PCIT have experienced a reduction in negative behaviors, including:
PCIT helps parents feel:
Our California parenting therapy team provides nonjudgmental understanding, unique observations, and valuable techniques to help your family grow stronger.
Parent-child interaction therapy has two parts. Our experienced, highly qualified staff will supervise “playdates” between parents and children, supporting the development of better interaction skills. The important thing to note is that the child will lead the playdate, allowing the parent to better understand how their child thinks and experiences the world.
The second part of PCIT takes place only with the parents. Your parent coach will equip you with new and positive parenting strategies to help you work with your child rather than being in constant opposition. If your child has a specific condition, the staff will also provide personalized child behavior interventions.
It usually takes between 12 and 20 sessions of parent interaction therapy to see lasting results. The exact number depends on each family’s needs and their engagement during and between sessions.
Some families may need fewer sessions, while others need more. However, the number of sessions needed does not reflect well or poorly on the family.
Yes, you can attend parenting therapy alone. However, we feel that having both parents participate is better for a more unified front. If one parent struggles to connect with their child more than the other, they certainly may attend sessions on their own.
Parent-child interaction therapy is important because whilecaregiving is an extremely tough job, it’s also the most rewarding. Parents, whether new or experienced, can always use extra support when raising a child—even more so if a child has a medical condition or developmental delays.
When caregivers struggle, they often keep silent because they feel it’s a poor reflection of their abilities. This action leaves them feeling exhausted, frustrated, and vulnerable to mental health problems. This situation is also not ideal for the child.
To provide loving care for your child, you must understand the importance of loving and caring for yourself, too.
Our team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic has decades of experience working with kids and adults. We’ll provide you with the best tools and strategies during parent-child interaction therapy sessions to better understand your child and their needs. When you can comprehend how they think and see the world, you’ll create a stronger bond with each other.
