What Is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition linked with inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD typically arises in childhood and continues through adolescence and adulthood; many people with ADHD aren’t diagnosed until adulthood.

ADHD can negatively affect school performance, self-esteem, and social interactions, resulting in difficulties forming friendship bonds and ongoing behavioral problems. Early diagnosis and intervention can make a significant impact on your child’s learning and emotional well-being.

ADHD is also associated with a variety of co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depressionanxiety, and other mood disorders, learning disorders, sleep disorders, and substance abuse.

What Are the Symptoms of ADHD?

Every person with ADHD experiences symptoms differently. ADHD symptoms fall within three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Inattention

  • Poor executive function
  • Disorganization
  • Difficulty listening
  • Avoiding mentally demanding tasks
  • Losing necessary items
  • Losing focus before completing a task
  • Fidgeting
  • Constant movement
  • Excessive talking
  • Difficulty remaining quiet during tasks
  • Making fast decisions
  • Risk-taking behavior
  • Interrupting
  • Constant motion

Who Can Diagnose ADHD?

Because it can occur along with other conditions, it’s essential to have an experienced mental health provider perform an ADHD assessment for you or your child. We perform a comprehensive evaluation using evidence-based assessment tools to diagnose ADHD and any co-occurring conditions accurately.

Using DSM-5 Criteria

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), is the diagnostic standard for ADHD. According to DSM-5, to be diagnosed with ADHD, you must have:

  • 6 or more inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (for people up to age 16)
  • 5 or more inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (for people 17 and older)

We want to understand the patient as a person, so we’ll ask those around them questions about their symptoms and potential problems. We’ll also talk to the patient to understand their experience with their symptoms and their severity.

Typical questions can include:

  • Do you (or your child) have trouble finishing tasks?
  • Does ADHD run in the family?
  • Do you (or your child) fidget when having to sit still for long periods?
  • Are you (or your child) easily distracted?

As part of our holistic therapy assessment, we may ask the patient to have a physical exam to determine that there are no physical reasons causing symptoms.

What Our Clients Say

“Dr. Abbey saved our family. This might sound like hyperbole, but it is true. At 5 years, my son was almost non-verbal, and diagnosed by Stanford as being on the Autistic spectrum, and rated 9/10 on the ADHD scale. No private school would take him. A Doctor at the CHADD conference recommended Dr. Abbey to us, and when he did a brain map, it turned out our son had Auditory Processing disorder. A tutor had almost given up on him being able to learn reading through phonics. Just a few Neurofeedback sessions later, my son started blending sounds, and started reading very soon. Almost a year of Neurofeedback sessions later, my son's hyperactivity had almost ceased. He could play and work at school without disrupting the class, and is doing so much better than I could have hoped. Both sets of Grandparents were amazed by the transformation. Dr. Abbey and Rachael Little are our saviors. My daughter also went through the same treatment and we saw great results. The people at the Abbey Clinic are like our family.”

ADHD is diagnosed through a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation using DSM-5 criteria. At Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic, we use evidence-based assessment tools to measure attention, impulsivity, and executive functioning, and we gather input from parents and teachers to understand how symptoms show up in daily life.

Children can be evaluated as early as age 4 or 5, though many families seek testing once school demands increase around ages 6 to 8. If attention, behavior, or learning concerns are affecting your child at home or school, an evaluation is worthwhile at any age.

Yes. We evaluate and treat ADHD in both children and adults. Many adults seek testing after years of struggling with focus, follow-through, or organization, and a clear diagnosis can open the door to effective, medication-free treatment.

Most comprehensive evaluations involve several hours of testing, sometimes spread across more than one appointment, followed by a feedback session to review results and recommendations. We will give you a clear timeline when you schedule.

Yes, co-occurring conditions are common. Many people with ADHD also experience anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, or learning disabilities. Our evaluations are designed to identify the full picture so treatment addresses every factor, not just one diagnosis.
