FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, which is also known as EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback, harnesses your brain’s capacity to change in order to reshape weaknesses in brain function. Using neurofeedback techniques, the team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic can train your brain to function in healthier ways for optimal performance.

At Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic, the team takes a collaborative approach to neurofeedback treatment and asks you what you consider a successful outcome. Then, they refer to these goals throughout training, to ensure you’re making progress. The team works with you to understand your unique challenges and tells you if they can or cannot help.

Neurofeedback uses EEG technology to influence the activity of neurons in your brain. Everything you do, process, and experience is the result of the electrical firing of neurons. Using a 19-channel EEG, also known as Z-score neurofeedback, the team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic can see whether there is too much or too little activity in specific cortical regions of your brain.

During a series of 20 sessions, your brain experiences over 70,000 different opportunities to learn. The latest research in psychology and neuroscience shows that repetition leads to changes in your brain’s behavior or neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity allows you to reshape your brain and overcome the challenges you face.

Neurofeedback is entirely noninvasive and pain-free. However, you may experience short-term side effects such as irritability, restlessness, headaches, or tiredness. Though annoying, these symptoms should subside within 24 hours of treatment.

It’s important to remember that neurofeedback is a type of practice. Every time your brain moves toward healthier functioning, you’re rewarded.

If you want to enhance the effects of neurofeedback, it’s important to practice good neurological health. The team recommends eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, sleeping for eight hours every night, and engaging in regular exercise. If possible, you should also try and reduce screen time on your tablet, smartphone, and computer.

The team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic uses a holistic, multimodal approach, combining brain training with other skill-based interventions such as psychotherapy, mindfulness exercises, and neurovisual training.

Neurofeedback is a relatively new science that’s just now entering the mainstream. The team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic stays abreast of  all the new research and developments in therapeutic treatments, to ensure you receive the best possible care.

Neurofeedback is a safe and effective therapy for most patients. It’s particularly valuable as a treatment for:

  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • Aging
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • ASD (autism spectrum disorder)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Concussion
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)

The team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic wants you to feel comfortable and informed when deciding on whether neurofeedback is right for you. They are always happy to provide further information about neurofeedback on request.

Dr. Abbey saved our family. This might sound like hyperbole, but it is true. At 5 years, my son was almost non-verbal, and diagnosed by Stanford as being on the Autistic spectrum, and rated 9/10 on the ADHD scale. No private school would take him. A Doctor at the CHADD conference recommend Dr. Abbey to us, and when he did a brain map...

The clinic itself is fine. The building is in a convenient location on Cal Ave and there's usually parking. Wish they'd leave the bathroom door unlocked, tho. What I'm more interested in is recommending therapist Rachael Little to anyone hoping to feel better or at least know that someone out there cares. I ended up with Rachael mostly by luck...
