Movement Learning for Children

Sometimes, learning isn’t meant to be done in a chair all day. Our Palo Alto clinic’s unique online program combines movement and cognitive training to help your child strengthen the connection between mind and body.

What Is Movement Learning?

Movement-based learning, or movement learning, is the incorporation of physical movement into learning to aid in cognitive and physical development.

When we think of learning, we often think of sitting in a classroom for long periods, but movement learning challenges that norm. Many children benefit from engaging in movement while learning. For example, if a child gets up and performs rhythmic movements while learning about words, they may be able to focus and remember the definitions more easily than if they were forced to sit in one place for several hours.

Experts believe this type of learning strengthens the connection between the brain and the body. Moreover, research shows that combining movement and learning can reduce stress and improve concentration, retention, and problem-solving.

Who Is Movement Learning For?

Movement learning can be helpful for children and adults alike, assisting with a variety of cognitive needs. This form of learning has been shown to be particularly useful for those with:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Apraxia/dyspraxia
  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Autism
  • Brain injury
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Dyslexia
  • Nonverbal learning disorder
  • Sensory processing disorder
  • Stroke
  • Stuttering

It’s also a great learning tool for kinesthetic learners.

Signs Your Child Needs Movement Learning

People tend to assume that high energy is just a sign of being a healthy kid. While this is often true, parents should monitor whether their children are struggling with academic learning or controlling their bodies. If you see the following signs, schedule an appointment with us.

  • Bumping into doors or crashing into walls
  • Constantly moving
  • Touching everything
  • Using excess force or aggressive behaviors
  • Difficulty listening to others
  • Speaking loudly
  • Constantly making noises

How Our Movement and Learning Program Helps Your Child

Our Move and Learn program motivates brain and movement power in learning. Building on your child’s strengths, the program helps develop skills in processing speed, mental timing, and self-regulation. Ultimately, your child will become more attuned to their body and gain more control.

Abbey’s compassionate team of experts uses evidence-based assessments and tools to diagnose and treat your child. If we believe our Move and Learn program is right for them, we will incorporate it into a personalized treatment plan. Your child can work with our Interactive Metronome trainers to complete a series of exercises and games in their home.

In addition to serving the Palo Alto area, the clinic is now offering Telehealth to clients in California, Texas, and Florida!

What Is Interactive Metronome?

Interactive Metronome is a high-quality occupational therapy tool that can play a key role in movement and learning programs. Using headphones, a computer screen, and interactive tools, it engages children in rhythmic exercises and games that make the learning process more fun and less scary—all while improving motor skills and cognition.

Our mental health professionals are certified to use Interactive Metronome and will be with your child through every step of the process.

How long it takes to see improvement will depend on your child’s needs and challenges. Some people have seen significant improvements from just a few weeks of movement learning sessions. The best way to get an estimate of the treatment timeline is to schedule a consultation and personalized assessment for your child.
