Biofeedback Training Therapy for Anxiety, ADHD/ADD, and Autism

Struggling with a mental health condition that doesn’t seem to get better with traditional treatments is incredibly frustrating. Let’s work together if you’re searching for a holistic approach to mental health treatment.

What Is Biofeedback Training Therapy?

Biofeedback training is a noninvasive, safe, and effective mind-body therapy that strengthens your mind’s and body’s connection, leading to improvements in mental and emotional health. It does this by showing current physical reactions to different mental states. Our team will then teach you how to relax and regulate your body’s physiological response to stress.

If traditional mental health treatments aren’t working for you, biofeedback may be the solution because you’ve lost control of how your body reacts to your emotions. Under constant stress due, say, to an anxiety disorder, your muscles tighten, leading to pain and fatigue.

Biofeedback for anxiety would show you that happening in real time, so you can actively stop tensing.

How Does Biofeedback Therapy Work?

Your clinician will place electrodes or bands on your body. As the electrodes pick up and measure physiological responses, that information is transmitted to a computer. The computer then creates a visual representation of your internal state on the monitor.

Depending on the program used, you may see your biological processes displayed as moving lines, objects, or other images, with or without sounds. While you wear the electrodes, you’ll immediately see changes on the monitor as changes occur in your stress levels.

Different Types of Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback training can address various parts of your body, depending on the type used:

Breathing

Bands are put around your stomach and chest, so sensors can read your breathing rate. As you learn to control your breathing better, the rate will change.

Brain

An electroencephalograph (EEG) monitors your brain waves to show different brain/emotional states. As you go through therapy, you will be able to actively change those states to improve your mental state.

Heart

An electrocardiogram (ECG) measures your heart rate while you learn how to slow it down.

Muscle

An electromyograph (EMG) measures your current muscle tension so you can actively release it.

Sweat

Pads are attached to your fingers, wrist, or palm to measure sweat gland activity. You will then do exercises to lower that activity.

Temperature

Pads are attached to your fingers or feet to see the blood flow under your skin, which can affect how warm or cold you feel. Those under stress tend to feel colder, so you’ll be able to see how actively relaxing warms you up.

What Mental Health Problems Benefit from Biofeedback Therapy?

Biofeedback therapy is an effective therapy for many mental and physical health problems that doesn’t require medication. We use biofeedback for ADHD/ADD and other conditions, including:

  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Autism
  • Depression
  • Frustration
  • Insomnia
  • Panic attacks
  • Stress

Biofeedback training may also improve health conditions such as hypertension, headaches, migraines, chronic pain, and irregular heartbeats.

What Should I Expect During Biofeedback Therapy?

During your biofeedback therapy sessions, you will learn relaxation techniques. You may learn skills such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, or mindfulness meditation, depending on the method that works for you.

You practice your technique while wearing the electrodes, allowing you to see real-time changes on the monitor as your purposeful effort affects your body. The goal is to train yourself to relax, let go of negative emotions, and maintain that improved state.

At first, you’ll achieve the goal by looking at the monitor. You may think you’re calm, but if the image on the monitor shows your stress increase, then you need to refocus on your relaxation technique.

The clinic now offers telehealth to clients in California, Texas, and Florida!

Benefits of Biofeedback

Does Insurance Cover Biofeedback Training?

It can, depending on your coverage and diagnosis—but it depends. Ask your insurance company for a definitive answer.

Biofeedback therapy trains you to regulate the body functions associated with your emotional state, such as your heart rate, skin temperature, and sweating.

Normally, your sympathetic nervous system controls these stress biomarkers, automatically making changes as needed to deal with daily challenges. When your body’s self-regulation becomes imbalanced, however, you stay in a chronically hyperactive state, and this leads to a variety of problems.

Over about six weekly sessions, you’ll learn to self-regulate without the real-time biofeedback. At that stage, you can use your new skills to maintain emotional balance in your real life.
