Ways to Optimize Learning for Your Child with ADHD

November 25, 2022 abbey No Comments

If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, you know that one of the biggest challenges is helping him or her focus on schoolwork. That’s because people with ADHD can sometimes have a more challenging time paying attention, can be easily distracted, and might have trouble staying organized.

But there are things you can do to help your child succeed in school. Here are some tips that you may find helpful:

Kids with ADHD, sleep, and school work

Make sure your child gets enough to sleep every night. Kids who don’t get enough sleep may not be able to focus well in class or pay attention to what their teachers are saying.

To help your child get a good night’s sleep, set an early bedtime routine that includes reading or playing quietly until it’s time to turn the lights out. Screen time should be limited to 2 hours before bed.

Kids with ADHD and homework

Keep track of how much time your child spends doing homework each night so that they don’t fall behind on assignments. It’s also important to monitor what time you expect your child to start studying; this way, they know exactly when they need to start working on homework assignments instead of waiting until the last minute! A routine can be a great idea to implement early in their schooling.

The ADHD brain

One way to look at the ADHD brain is that it’s like a car engine that revs up too high: It has trouble shifting gears smoothly from one task to another. That means kids with ADHD may have trouble staying focused on what they need to do next. This could mean that your child has difficulty finishing their homework or paying attention in class.

ADHD management

If your child has a diagnosis of ADHD, you know how important it is to help them manage their daily routines. This helps her to be successful both at home and at school. You can do this by creating an environment that is conducive to learning and by providing positive reinforcement when they succeed at tasks that require self-control, focus, organization, or time management skills.

The ADHD brain needs structure, so making sure your home life is organized and based on regular expectations can be helpful for your child. Having set bedtime routines and healthy eating habits may help your child regulate their moods and focus better.

People with ADHD can struggle with organization, planning, and prioritizing tasks; therefore, your child’s teachers must be on board to provide support. Teachers must learn what works best for them. Some individuals may benefit from having extra time on tests or modified homework assignments.

Remember that this is a team effort! Keep communication open with your child’s teachers and clinicians. We would love to help you here at the Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic. Feel free to reach out to us.
