There are a number of diagnoses that can impact school and work performance. The results of a psycho-educational evaluation can provide information about learning disabilities, executive function challenges, and psychological distress that may be impacting a a client's learning or functioning.

We do detailed investigations of developmental and academic history. Our extensive testing battery examines intellectual, academics, attention, executive functioning, language, visuospatial, memory, and fine motor skills. This evaluation can clarify diagnosis or gain understanding of functioning.

Psycho-educational assessments provide information about your functioning in areas that may impact school or work. For children, an early diagnosis can be very important since their bodies are still on route to development. For teenagers and adults, it may clarify a history of struggles or difficulties.

Written and verbal feedback is detailed and tailored to the needs of the client and, if applicable, the referral source.

A psychological assessment is in-depth in that it breaks down skills into the underlying abilities or components.

Patterns of strengths and weaknesses in skills are interpreted from a holistic and comprehensive point of view.​

An assessment (whether psychological, neuropsychological, or psycho-educational) is a battery of tests designed to identify your level of cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. We specialize in neuropsychological evaluations, which offer the benefit of our experience with complex neurological and medical disorders in childhood and consider results within the framework of brain functioning. We use a variety of traditional and innovative assessment tools and expert knowledge to discover your unique profile of strengths and weaknesses. Testing takes place over multiple sessions, and once we have a clearer understanding of the difficulties you face, we provide effective and efficient solutions. We work with you to help you achieve understanding and provide options for improvement.

Our broad battery of tests look carefully at intelligence, language, visual-spatial abilities, fine motor skills, speed of information processing, memory, learning, attention, academic abilities, emotional and social functioning, cognitive flexibility, problem solving, conceptualization, planning and organization, visual tracking, and more. As weaknesses surface throughout the testing process, more tests might be given to discover the root of struggles. Moreover, we work from a strength-based model, so identifying what you are really good at is also extremely important. Our team provides care for all of you – body and mind.

Our clinicians see clients of all ages, from 2 to 102! We often see people who are experiencing difficulties across environments, whether it is in the classroom or work (difficulties in specific subjects, problems with attention, executive functioning difficulties, procrastination, weak working memory or processing speed), with a medical condition (concussion, seizures), that have been diagnosed with developmental delays (down syndrome, autism), social and emotional difficulties (anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD), and/or just to have a baseline level of current functioning. Whether you are facing a challenge in learning, behavior, or development, or if you simply want to understand yourself at a deeper level, we help move you ahead with practical solutions.

These evaluations are further useful to:

  • Aid in diagnosis or rule out certain conditions
  • Track progress before and after interventions
  • Plan educational or vocational programs
  • Determine a disability
  • Provide a baseline
  • Aid in treatment and family planning for people suffering from neurological or developmental disorders

On average our assessments involve 14-16 hours of in-person time. No matter which evaluation route you proceed with, it includes a thorough interview, specialized assessment measures (one-on-one with the examiner, some computerized evaluations, and rating scales), a comprehensive written report that details the results in easy-to-understand language and graphical representations, and an extensive list of practical recommendations, therapies, and tools to help scaffold your success across environments. With your permission, contact is made with collateral sources (physicians, teachers, therapists, spouses, etc…) to contribute to our understanding of you, as well as to follow-up on recommendations when applicable.

Often, certain challenges (i.e., attention deficits) coexist with other difficulties in life (i.e., learning, anxiety, behavioral challenges, or even family stressors), as such we recommend a comprehensive assessment, especially for school-aged children who may require accommodations in school or on standardized testing. However, sometimes, the picture is less complex, and you may want diagnostic clarification in order to better focus treatment planning. If so, we can potentially provide a focused assessment that can usually be scheduled with little delay. Similar to our comprehensive route, our approach is collaborate, involves specialized measure unique to your specific concerns, and recommendations for steps moving forward.

We do not share the results of the assessment to anyone without your written consent.

In general, you might find it helpful to share your assessment (whether a diagnosis was provided or not) with various professional in your life (i.e., physician, psychiatrist, therapist, etc…) who will likely find the results helpful in further treatment planning. Furthermore, if your child was assessed, it might be beneficial to share the results with their school in order to qualify for support services or to receive accommodations (e.g., extended time, priority seating, use of laptop) in order to help your child, learn best.

Abbey Clinic continues testing until all questions and concerns are addressed. We do not work under time constraints, and we will continue to assess until we get a clear, in depth picture of you. Our assessment tools are updated, specialized, and at times, innovative. While the quantitative data is important in understanding your strengths and weaknesses, our qualitative date of observation and rapport-building is an equally important aspect of the complex picture.

Our written reports are comprehensive with visual representations so that anyone can review the report and get a clear understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. Finally, we pride ourselves on our recommendations, a roadmap towards wellness for you. Assessments help us determine the root of any challenges you may be experiencing, but it is important that we also offer concrete solutions to these difficulties. We keep in close contact with providers in the area, maintain relationships with schools (both public and private), and stay up-to-date on conference with the latest technology and interventions available. Our recommendations include, but are not limited to, classroom/work accommodations, traditional and innovative therapies, technological supports, remediation programs, appropriate books and websites, behavioral guides, advocacy referrals, and summer programs. While many of these treatments can be found within our center, we are committed to providing you with referrals close to home.
