Memory

Memory is an aspect of cognition, the thinking and reasoning side of your brain. There are several reasons why you might have memory problems.

Head injuries can cause amnesia, which may be temporary or permanent. Amnesia can leave you with no memory of the events just before your head injury or substantial parts of your life. Illnesses and surgery can also cause degrees of memory loss, but one of the most common causes of memory problems is dementia, which causes overall cognitive decline.

Symptoms of cognitive decline can include:

  • Memory loss
  • Language problems
  • Poor judgment
  • Decision-making difficulties
  • Delayed thinking

The team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic uses advanced, state of the art brain training solutions to help individuals who have memory and cognition problems.

Every patient at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic undergoes an assessment of their unique needs and level of functioning before the team prepares a customized treatment plan. Having an accurate and meaningful assessment can be reassuring and give you a better understanding of how to move forward with treatment.

Neuropsychological evaluations can be helpful to see what areas are affected and how severe the problem is. The team uses multiple, specialized tests that give you insight into your symptoms, written out clearly for you in your assessment report. The report also includes next steps to start you on your treatment path.

The team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic uses several approaches to treating memory and cognition problems, including:

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is an all-natural therapy that makes lasting changes to your brain’s imbalanced brain waves, a common source of memory problems. Neurofeedback can help increase attention and improve judgment as well as enhancing memory.

Cogmed

Working memory is part of your short-term memory. Problems with short-term memory loss are often related to a problem with working memory, for example forgetting where you left your keys. Cogmed Working Memory Training® is a program that exercises the working memory to strengthen it, and this, in turn, helps improve your overall memory.

Light therapy

Near-infrared light therapy stimulates a biological response at the cellular level. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is your body’s primary source of energy, and near-infrared light therapy is known to increase ATP biosynthesis.

Research shows that this has several possible implications, including increasing the quantity of neurotransmitters (like serotonin and dopamine), decreasing inflammation, and making neurogenesis and neuroplasticity possible.

CVAC™

As you get older, it often becomes more difficult to exercise enough. One answer is Cyclic Variations in Adaptive Conditioning (CVAC), which is a whole-body adaptive conditioning program. It makes dynamic changes in pressure that produce an adaptive response from your body. Using CVAC pod, you can exercise and recover at the same time.

Your body responds to CVAC as it would to moderate or high-intensity exercise. However, it signals your nervous system to go into recovery mode and signals your parasympathetic system to go into “rest and digest” mode. This stimulates lymphatic flow and cerebrospinal fluid movement and sends blood to your liver instead of your legs and arms.

The solutions used by the team at Abbey Neuropsychology Clinic are evidence-based and rigorously studied, and patients from all walks of life who have a variety of memory problems have benefited from these memory treatments.

Dr. Abbey saved our family. This might sound like hyperbole, but it is true. At 5 years, my son was almost non-verbal, and diagnosed by Stanford as being on the Autistic spectrum, and rated 9/10 on the ADHD scale. No private school would take him. A Doctor at the CHADD conference recommend Dr. Abbey to us, and when he did a brain map...

The clinic itself is fine. The building is in a convenient location on Cal Ave and there's usually parking. Wish they'd leave the bathroom door unlocked, tho. What I'm more interested in is recommending therapist Rachael Little to anyone hoping to feel better or at least know that someone out there cares. I ended up with Rachael mostly by luck...
